Ruth Greenleaves has been in the beauty and holistics business for 15 years. Seven years working in a salon, including 3 as manageress and for the last 7 years she has worked as a mobile beauty and holistic therapist. Ruth has built up an impressive client base during this time and wanted to offer clients something more. In a persons home there are often many distractions - telephones ringing, a knock at the door, children or pets creating havoc in the background! Ruth hit on the idea of a summer house in her garden, where clients can step away from the stress and strain of life and have a dedicated time just for themselves. After a lot of thought and effort The Holistic Hut was ready for business and opened it’s doors last month. The Hut is well insulated and heated so even in winter it will be a cosy retreat.
I was invited along to try The Bowen Technique, which is a holistic therapy that Ruth is very passionate about. Ruth had tendonitis in her shoulder and had been in considerable pain for 6 months, she’d had difficulty getting dressed, reaching for things and couldn’t raise her arm above her shoulder. A fellow holistic therapist suggested The Bowen Technique and although at first Ruth was a little sceptical she decided to give it a go. After just 4 treatments Ruth was pain free and had full range of movement, that was 3 years ago! After 9 months training at considerable cost Ruth is thrilled that she can now offer the treatment to others.
So what is The Bowen Technique?
In a nutshell it aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms. It can be used to treat practically any problem including back and neck pain, sciatica, knee problems, sports injuries, IBS, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, migraine, asthma and stress management to name but a few.
During the treatment Ruth used her thumbs and fingers to make a series of precise, rolling-type moves over specific muscles. In between there are a series of short breaks, where I was left to rest. This is an important part of the treatment and gives the body time to make the subtle adjustments to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain.
After the treatment Ruth asked if I’d felt anything unusual happen and although I felt a bit daft saying it, I explained that I’d felt a sensation like two little wheels or cogs turning inwards towards each other at the base of my back. Ruth beamed and explained that was fantastic as my body was realigning itself. It’s a bizarre gentle treatment and I was very sceptical but later that night I realised that the recent pain in my shoulder had reduced greatly and I haven’t had a migraine since so I’ve booked another session as I’m rather intrigued!
Other holistic treatments available include Reflexology and Hopi Ear Candles. Deep Tissue / Swedish massage to reduce tension and knots by getting deep into the muscles.
Reiki Therapy which is a deeply relaxing, stress relieving and awakening treatment which balances the mind, body and spirit.
Tibetan Acupressure scalp massage is fantastic for mental and emotional problems and relaxes face, neck and shoulder muscles.
Aromatherapy massage using a blend of essential oils that are personal to you, Ruth mixes a blend specific to your individual needs, problem or concerns, they aren’t pre mixed.
Beauty Treatments include the popular ‘Melt Away’ Back treatment - a cleanse, exfoliate, massage and mask treatment for the back, heavenly!
A variety of facial treatments are available including Repair and Restore and Collagen Eye Treatment.
Hand, feet and nail treatments cover a full range from ‘Tidy me up’ manicure through to ‘Pamper me senseless’ pedicure! Acrylic nail services are also available.
Eye enhancement treatments include eyebrow shape, eyebrow and eyelash tint, cluster eyelash extensions and strip eyelash extensions.
Hair Dazzle are reflective sparkling strands that are temporarily tied into the hair adding shimmer and sparkle at every movement. The sparkling strands can be washed, blow dried and styled like normal hair - yes even straightened and tonged! They are only £2 per strand and various colours are available, perfect for the festival or party season.
Waxing and St. Tropez tanning is also available.
Ruth obviously loves her job, I asked her which was her favourite therapy or treatment and her reply was “Bowen, aromatherapy, relexology and facials”! I did eventually get her to decide on one and that was not surprisingly The Bowen Technique, after all she has experienced the benefits first hand.
